NIGHT FIGHTERS: Bristol Blenheim fighters have played their part with distinction during the recent night raids on this country. In addition to a battery of fixed guns the fighter Blenheim has the advantage of a power-driven turret. Its endurance and accommodation are both assets in night operations.

A hypothetical action picture centring round a Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 three-engined bomber of the Italian Air Force. The location of the upper and lower 12.7 mm. guns can be clearly seen. A fourth weapon is sometimes carried inside the fuselage and arranged so that it may be fired on either side through a window. All the guns are manually trained and aiming is rendered more difficult due to their bulk and weight. Everything considered the S.M.79 should be an easy proposition for R.A.F. fighters.

McKean, Air Chief Liaison Officer of the U.K. Air Liaison Mission. A.V-M. McKean inspected the Air Armament School, the Central Flying School, the Air Navigation School, and the School of Administration. Aircraft in the picture include Lockheed Hudsons, Fairey Battles, Avro Ansons, North American Harvards, Airspeed Oxfords, and Fleet Finches.

One of three types of American fighter which may conceivably be seen in this country before very long. There is the twin-engined Grumman Skyrocket for which is claimed an extremely high rate of climb. It appears that the fuselage has deliberately been kept short in the nose to permit the close grouping of the engines and airscrews. Armament is carried in the nose of the fuselage.

Регистрационный номер: L3084 Истребитель "Рок" I из 778-й эскадрильи, 1940 г.
Blackburn Roc L3084. This two-seat Fleet trainer first entered FAA service in February 1940, with 806 Sqn at Eastleigh. The type ended its days as a target tug and trainer and the last examples were retired in August 1943. Powered by a 890 h.p. Bristol Perseus XII radial engine, the Roc had a range of about 480 nautical miles.
Structurally similar to the Skua, the Roc had a widened fuselage to accommodate the Boulton Paul gun turret and the mainplane had 2 deg dihedral outboard of the centre section.
The accuracy and weight of fire of their turreted armament are the pride of British naval gunners. Equally fine results are being obtained with the Boulton Paul four-gun turret on the Blackburn Roc two-seater fleet fighter, a new view of which is given above. It will be seen that the turret operates in conjunction with retractable fairings.Самолёты на фотографии: Blackburn Roc / B-25 - Великобритания - 1938

PRETTY, BUT - : This issue contains the first reasonably detailed description of the Italian Savoia-Marchetti S.M.85 singleseater, twin-engined dive-bomber. In addition to the above aesthetically attractive view of a formation of these machines, other pictures appear on pages d and 25. The S.M.85, although interesting as an offensive weapon, would stand little chance against a Hurricane, Spitfire, or Defiant, or, for that matter, against a Skua, Roc or Gladiator.

HOLIDAY AIRPORT. After three years of beach landings Jersey Airways now have an aerodrome to use in Jersey. This Flight photograph was taken through a cabin window of the first D.H.86 to come in on regular service. The possible ravages of a small insect - the Colorado beetle - at present restricts the entry of the private owner; the sea crossing from France is a matter only of fourteen miles.
